Mammography technicians are experts in using low-dose amplitude X-ray technology as a means of examining human breast tissue for signs of tumors cysts lesions or other abnormalities. The mammography technician must be capable of creating a clearly readable image which will be used by a radiologist or oncologist to make a diagnosis. In some cases mammography technicians also process and file confidential patient records or even arrange for billing when a procedure is completed. Aspiring mammography technicians must attend vocational school or a community college where they earn a two-year associate's degree in radiology andor ultrasound technology or sonography. In addition courses in interpersonal communication are required because mammography technicians must be able to explain procedures and develop rapport with patients. The institution there they obtain their training must be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. At the end of their training program mammography technicians must pass a certification test in the state where they plan to work. Most mammography technicians work in clinics and hospitals that have advanced imaging and ultrasound equipment. There will continue to be a need for mammography technicians but many hospitals prefer to hire individuals that have multiple specialties. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics mammography technicians earn a median annual salary of approximately $57000.
