The mammography technician must be capable of creating a clearly readable image which will be used by a radiologist or oncologist to make a diagnosis. In some cases mammography technicians also process and file confidential patient records or even arrange for billing when a procedure is completed. Aspiring mammography technicians must attend vocational school or a community college where they earn a two-year associate's degree in radiology andor ultrasound technology or sonography. The website httpeducation-portal.com states that radiological technology programs generally include courses such as X-ray physics radiobiology CT imaging principles of exposure pharmacology medical ethics as well a clinical practicum or internship. In addition courses in interpersonal communication are required because mammography technicians must be able to explain procedures and develop rapport with patients. Some earn bachelor's degrees that combine these courses with studies in liberal arts and social sciences. The institution there they obtain their training must be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. At the end of their training program mammography technicians must pass a certification test in the state where they plan to work. Most mammography technicians work in clinics and hospitals that have advanced imaging and ultrasound equipment.
