Careers » Criminal Justice » Security Guard

Security guards deter illegal activity and keep law-abiding citizens safe. The nature of the duties they perform varies depending on their employer's rules and expectations. Some are required to monitor closed circuit security cameras and to be on the lookout for anything suggesting foul play. Others are stationed at entryways where they check IDs of anyone entering a building. Still others may be expected to patrol a building or surrounding area to protect against burglars vandals or intruders. Security guards work full-time or part-time and one of the attractions of this job is the flexible hours. However the job does have safety risks which is the reason many security guards are trained in how to use firearms. Security guards can work for government agencies or for the private sector. Some are employed by security agencies but others work directly for the party for whom services are rendered. Security guards are typically found in banks malls stores museums hospitals nightclubs and office buildings but some are hired to protect armored cars or for special events in arenas or other public places. Security guards need a high school diploma or the equivalent. Some vocational schools offer courses in security although security guards can also be trained by the employer. Some but not all states have a mandatory requirement that security guards be licensed. It is helpful for security guards to have some prior in experience in the law enforcement field. Security guards with associate's degrees in criminal justice are usually promoted more readily and paid more. According to the website www.buzzle.com security jobs pay between $20000 and $35000 a year.
